I'm looking to pick up a compact tractor, and I'm fighting with the new versus used issue. Seems new tractors just cost more than I think I really want to spend, and there doesn't seem to be much used in my price range. I'm looking for 18-21HP, 4WD, with a loader, Hydrostatic and Power Steering (my wife's got to drive it too, and she is not too excited on shifting). Can a good used tractor be found in this range that's not 20 years or more old? Seems my price target for a used tractor would be $6000-$8000. Do used tractors just not drop in price much? On the new side, MF has some compacts that are a little bit more economical than Boomers and JD, but is this a good brand? Thanks for any advice!

There is nothing at all wrong with a 20 year old compact....except that itwon't have a hydrostat. That's a more recent option. Well, they didhave it many years ago, but it was never popular until recently. It will behard to find a tractor over 10 years old that is hydrostatic. Used tractors don't drop much in price at all. It isn't uncommon for themto lose about 10% to 15% when first bought and then stay at that same dollarfigure for decades. Eventually inflation makes the price of used ones attractive. Massey Ferguson is a fine tractor. In fact, it seems to be the best tractorfor the money right now....at least in my opinion. They have had a long productionrun with the current models. Where are you getting the 'good prices' on MF? The dealers that I have priced in the Northren VA area seem to have as high or higher prices than the Boomer or the Kubota. This is by about $1000. I'm looking at the Boomer TC18 or MF 1210. So I've pretty much given up on the Massey. ....

Like the other poster said, hydro tractors are still somewhat "new" as tractors go (since most tractors last forever when properly maintained). There is not as much supply of them in the resale market with 4wd and a loader in the price range you want to stay in. You might find some with 4wd and a loader in the 8k range (or less), but it will probably have high hours on it or look rough. I would encourage your wife to try and learn a straight drive. With most all tractors having a throttle that will hold at whatever rpm you set it at, and the diesel engines having so much torque, it makes it really easy to drive them. You just about have to try to choke it down. If she can learn to drive one with a manual, it really opens up your supply to a much larger offering. Good luck....Keith ....
